all girls are princesses and lily knows it

Emily: Girls go and clean your room please.

Both girls: Uhhhhh
Lily walks/stomps into her room; Grace goes in and starts to walk out again.

Emily: No no Gracie, you need to go clean your room.

Grace: No!

Lily (from in the bedroom): Graaaace! Princesses clean up!

Well said Lil. Now if she would only listen...

Dear Davie,

You remember that little stomach flu you kindly passed onto me? Well, keeping your poop in the diaper would be super appreciated right now. Thanks a bunch.

tragedy strikes!

All of my children have done this, but Gracie has taken it to the next level! What is the crime? Self-grooming, by way of the scissors!!!!

On Wednesday I went and had my hair cut and colored. When I came home everyone was full of ooooh's and ahhh's. Naturally Gracie was maybe feeling a little out of the limelight and probably thought I looked awesome, so she said she wanted her hair cut. It was the busy time of day; you know, the time when you are trying to get dinner going, homework done, and everyone is running around like little maniacs. So when she said that I just blew it off with a, "Oh Gracie, I will trim your hair tomorrow." And that was that...I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER.

About 20 minutes later Gracie appears in the kitchen looking like this (I am thinking she has a secret desire to be in a 1980's chick band)!

She had given herself a mullet. Not just a couple of nice little snips like Adam and Lily had done at this age - she cut everything up front. I tried to trim the back up a bit so it will look less mullet-ish, but it still looks terrible. Renee thinks I should take her to a salon and have them give her a pixie cut. I am not convinced. As beautiful as she is, she does have a chubby baby face and I am thinking a pixie cut may not be flattering on her (oh man, do I sound vain or what). But then again, a mullet is not too flattering either....

Good thing hair grows!

it is time for some privacy...why do people have to be such dorks?

I am afraid it is time to go private.

I keep getting comments from different porn sites - mostly Chinese (they have a translation button that I used and what is being written is NOT appropriate). It is really starting to bother me. I hate to think of who is looking at my life. It used to not bug me, but it has come to the point (after this most recent disgusting comment) that it really annoys me now.

So, if you would like to still view my blog (all two of you out there who still read it) please leave a comment and your e-mail address if I don't already have it. I am going private on the 20th.

Thanks!!!

Davie is cutting his top two teeth. He is actually being pretty pleasant - it can't be comfortable. When they are in I will get a nice toothy picture to post. He is such a little cutie! Here is a picture from last month of him that I just love!

mother's day garden fair

Tomorrow I will be selling my Soap Star Mom products at the Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District's Mother's Day Garden Fair (WOW, that was a mouthful). It should be a pretty fun event; first it is free, which is always a plus, also they will have a climbing wall, live entertainment, good food, a balloon artist and clown, garden-themed workshops and demos, and a bunch of vendor booths. We have gone in the past and it has always been fun. So if you are in the Salt Lake region on Saturday May 8th come on down. It is just down the street from my house; the address is 8215 South 1300 West in West Jordan. It is will be going from 9 to 5. Hope to see you there!

just what the doctor ordered

Wednesday afternoon my oldest sister Lisa (in green coat) flew in from California to go to BYU Women's Conference with me. We drove down and stayed in the dorms and met up with my other sister Jennifer until Saturday. The Lord really knew I needed this - He seemed to direct me to the exact classes that I needed. This is my fourth (I think) year going and this was the first year that every single class was great. In the past it is always hit and miss; there will always be a dud, but not this year. I came home feeling like I can do this whole "motherhood" thing and this whole "life" thing in general. I am so grateful for those few days I had and all the wonderful things I knew but had to be reminded of. I loved hearing the testimonies of so many people who have struggled, survived, and continued to smile - it was a GREAT event!

Thank you Lisa for making the great effort to come with me and thank you Jen for driving back and forth from Springville (next year you should just stay with us in the dorms); I could not have asked for better Conference companions!

As a sidenote, I went to Wal-Mart today with the kidlets and amazingly enough they behaved themselves. Miracles really do happen!!!!

if you want to feel better about your own life...read this novel

You know when you are young it is common (at least for girls) to imagine how your life will turn out. You start with imagining a perfect wedding to a perfect man and then soon enough you have children who are all, of course, perfect. In fact, it gets to the point that when we are out and about we seem to notice the parents we aren’t going to be and the type of children we aren’t going to have; you know, it is the parents with children who are running and yelling up and down the halls of a library. You’d never be the mothers who are running after them, frantic, frazzled, furious, and slightly over-weight and out of style. The mother who when she catches her “out of control” children becomes somewhat hysterical. In your mind you are thinking two things. The first is, ‘oh come on lady, they are just kids acting their age…’ and the second is, ‘I will never have children that are that misbehaved; and I will never act or look like that!’ Well my friend you just signed your life away with those two judgments!!! Goodbye fairy-tale life, Hello reality!

I have had a LONG day. It has been one of those days where I am sure motherhood is totally over-rated (for the record; it isn’t – it is just hard and no one has ever lied about that). This morning I knew I wasn’t going to be able to go to the gym because Adam and Grace had dentist appointments, so I got up around 6:30 and went running. It was hard (I am still really out of shape), but so enjoyable and peaceful. Basically my peace ended when I walked through the door at the end of the run. Of course Adam was one notch below panic mode because his one true love (me) was missing. Scott was reassuring him that I would come home. He was pretty relieved to see me; seriously dude, like I would just take off. We ate breakfast and I went to shower. After getting everyone ready I sent Lily off to school and the three other kids and I went to see Dr. Jason. I think you all know where I might be going with this; after all, most of you are familiar with Grace…Needless to say, it could have gone better; a lot better. When you have to leave your baby in the office (trusting total strangers, I might add) so that you can run out and catch your other two who have just walked onto an elevator you can pretty much tell that the experience isn’t going well. Or when you finally get them back in the office and they start grabbing for every toy in the prize box and refuse to settle on just one each and you end up leaving with both of them screaming and crying then you know you have hit the jackpot on bad outings. I am pretty sure the whole office all cheered when we left. The sad thing is, that wasn’t an unusual experience. It happens everywhere I go (except church because I have Scott there to help and it is a more familiar place for the kids).

So from there my day just kept getting worse. We needed to stop at the grocery store and of course Grace cried and screamed the entire time over who knows what – I think I have blocked it out of my memory and it was only 10:30 this morning. Davie was sort of at the end of his rope, which is understandable since I had been basically ignoring him all morning and all Adam could talk about is how he wanted some gummy worms! AHHHHHHH. We got through it and amazingly enough I was still smiling…

Then this afternoon just topped off the whole day! I had a PTA thing at the school that I wanted to go to and because I always see all the other parents there with their children I naively decided that maybe I could to. After all I couldn’t possibly be the only person around with monkeys disguised as children. Or am I? Plus I am really tired of ALWAYS asking my neighbors for help with watching my kids. I feel like the biggest mooch ever and I HATE it! So I decided to brave to PTA thing with all three of them (and really, how stupid am I – I just went through that whole day and I really thought it would turn out okay at the school!?). Well I won’t go into details; let’s just say that I have, in fact, turned into that mother that I was describing above. Except instead of running through a library screaming, mine where running up and down the halls of school in session screaming. I kid you not! They were out of control! At one point they were sitting on the floor of a doorway and a mom needed to get by and said, “Excuse me.” Instead of moving like polite children or even children who are nervous around other adults (like I was at that age) Adam just looked up and laughed at her, WITHOUT moving! I lost it! I told him that that is no way to treat anyone, but especially a grown-up who has asked politely for you to move. His eyes were completely glossed over and I could tell none of this was registering. Basically it just went drastically downhill from there. All the while all the other children that were there with their parents somehow seem to know how to stay close to their mothers, speak with an inside voice, say kind things to strangers, etc, etc, etc… and in the meantime I am getting those looks from all the people thinking the thought I expressed earlier. Thoughts like, ‘Maybe if she would try disciplining them then they wouldn’t be such terrors’ or ‘Wow, maybe she could get control of those children’ or ‘what monsters!’ or ‘Holy Cow, has she heard of a salad?’

Basically the bottom line is that I am that mother from above. The one that everyone stares at constantly and casts judgments upon. The one that no one thinks is quite adequate for parenthood. And the saddest part about it is that I actually wasn’t one of those people that looked at parents with a judgmental eye. I have always figured some people could do better, but for the most part, most people are just doing their best. So HOW DID I END UP WITH FOUR VERY RAMBUXIOS, HIGH-SPIRITED, INDEPENDENT, AND STUBBORN CHILDREN??????? I was such a nice child and I try to be pretty nice to people around me. I am energetic and a bit loud, but does that mean I deserve children who will not listen to a thing I say? I am beginning to think that maybe I am failing as a parent. I try to be patient (and actually I am pretty good at it, except for the PTA meeting) and consistent with discipline. I am usually happy and cheerful with them. I try and teach them responsibility by giving them chores and teaching them how to do them. I let them play freely without micromanaging them. I limit their TV time and they have never even been on the computer. I read to them almost nightly and make really good meals for them that are basically healthy. They go to the doctor and dentist when they need to and our house is usually pretty clean. I have tried to set a good example about body image and keeping our bodies healthy and active. We talk about manners and how to treat others. We sing and dance and play and talk, a lot! What am I missing? Why can’t my five year old behave in a public place or any place? Why does my three year feel the need to run away from me or throw a HUGE temper tantrum every time we go anywhere? It seems that no matter how many times I have our little “pep-talks” in the car as we are about to get out and enter the public eye it isn’t enough – they still just do what they want. And no matter how angry I get with them they just don’t seem to care. Maybe that is the hardest part for me; when my parents got mad at me as child I remember just feeling agony. My insides would just turn and turn and I would feel terrible. I hated it when they were angry or disappointed. But my kids just don’t seem to care. In fact I will be talking to them about something and not only will not listen or even really focus on me they will basically start to laugh at me. My goal in life isn’t to make them sad, but laughing at me when I am trying to be patient in disciplining them is not a great response. And then there is that part of me that doesn’t want to squash that happy little spirit in them, so then I feel guilty about ever losing my temper with them. But they need discipline and structure.

So as you can see, it has not been a totally awesome day. I feel like a failure. Like I am doing something drastically wrong. And on top of it all I cannot seem to lose these last ten pounds (I have never had this hard of a time before). I would love to take them more places and be more involved at the school, but it is impossible – they make it impossible. You may be thinking that maybe they act like this because I am so high-strung, but I don’t that is it. I have told myself hundreds of times to just mellow out, go with the flow and let them be children. They don’t act any calmer when I am calmer. If anything they seize the opportunity to really wreak havoc. So maybe I am seeking advice; although I am not sure any of it will help. None of you are here and see the dynamic of my hellions…uh…children. But if you do have some mind-blowing, life-changing, amazing advice I guess I wouldn’t be oppose to hearing it. Because as we stand I am ready to find an Indian Reservation and sell them to the Indians (my parents used to tell us that they would sell us to the Indians if we didn’t start behaving – at one point I actually though it sounded like a lot of fun; after all they eat fry bread and dance a lot. How could that be bad? As a sidenote, I mean to not disrespect Native Americans at all, it was just a saying we had growing up in Arizona where there are a lot of reservations).

Let me express one last thought…I actually do love my children tremendously. I love so many things about them. Mostly I love that they are interesting people who keep my life fun. I would not trade them for anything (so to any Indians out there, you can put your checkbooks away). They are funny, happy, silly, and smart little kids. BUT I am having a really hard time feeling like I am stuck here at home with them all day everyday because I can’t take them anywhere without being completely humiliated. I tired of paying babysitters and mooching off friends for help so that I can go and do simple things that I should be able to do with them. I guess that is why I decided to do today the way I did. I figured that at some point I am just going to need to get used to packing them ALL around with me everywhere I go. It just all went so badly and I am always holding out such hope that they will surprise me and behave the way I have taught them. I am tired of being disappointed. Motherhood is great if you like being lonely. That is how I feel a lot – lonely and tired. As for what happened after the school affair – I sent Adam and Grace to their rooms until dinner. Grace will no doubt fall asleep and Adam asks every two minutes if it dinner time yet. Maybe I should let him out before he gets to bored and decides to destroy something in his room. Hundred bucks says that I will go down to let him out and something will be destroyed out of innocent boredom. And so it starts again…

I guess I should reconcile the fact that life as I imagined is just that; imagined. This is reality, these are my darling and somewhat naughty children and no amount of dreaming was ever going to change that…we all must have made some kind of crazy deal before we came here. I must have really liked them then and they must have really liked me. So here we are, in reality!

genius

I am a genius. This is my new baby gate! What do you think? I know, you are thinking it looks beautiful right! Probably not...

Davie kept knocking down the traditional baby gate and the kids were having hard time getting over it to go up and down the stairs. Because Davie is most likely our last child I really didn't want to install one of the open and closing kind that attach to the wall. So I figured three 50 pound buckets of wheat would keep him from tumbling down the stairs; plus this way the kids can just climb over and use them as drums in the meantime. So FUN!!!

the latest and greatest

I know...finally! Here are some pictures and an update of what we have been doing...Due to General Conference falling on Easter Sunday we decided to dress up for Easter that last Sunday. The girls looked so pretty and Springy!

Adam loves the chickens. He likes to let them out in the yard and wander with them. When it is time to put them away he has come up with this very efficient method of carrying them two at a time. It is so cute!

Lily has been begging and begging to get her ears pierced for a couple years now. I have been all for it (if it were up to me I would have done it when she was a baby), but Scott has really been dragging his feet. He is really having a hard time letting his little Lily grow up. So he would tell her things like, "sure you can get them pierced, but it will hurt so bad and you will cry and cry." or "Remember how much the flu shots hurt? Well this is even worse - it is double to pain." It didn't work though and she still wanted them pierced. I finally decided that he really didn't have any good reason and I am her parent as well so I decided to get it done. Scott actually didn't fight me too much on it surprisingly...so last weekend she and I went to the mall and got it done. She was so brave and I have to tell you; she looks so adorable!!!!

We saw wild turkeys at Lisa's house. They were just out roaming on her property. It was really cool. They get all big and puffy trying to impress the ladies (turkeys, that it).
Lily had her 7th birthday at Aunt Lisa's house in California. The kids and I drove out there for Spring Break. I can hardly believe she is 7; I have to say...she the smartest, cutest, best little girl ever!

Davie is finally well! And so cute. He loves to make funny faces for me when I pull out the camera.
Lily lost her two bottom teeth (due to the dentist pulling them out - her two big teeth were grown in behind them quite a bit). It was her first lost teeth and she was pretty thrilled!

the belly rules the mind

Ok, so I know I have been promising a new entry; but I haven't downloaded my latest pictures, so in turn I haven't felt motivated enough to post anything new. I have, though, started a new blog that I thought I would introduce. It is entitled "the belly rules the mind" - basically it is my weekly menu. I will explain...

For several years now, in an attempt to keep my life predictable and organized, I have made a weekly menu. It is a menu of everything we will eat that night; from main meal to side dish and often dessert and special drink if applicable. Over time I have had requests to share my menus with people who need ideas or are busy (my sister Michelle mostly - she is a pretty busy girl). So I figured I would put them up each week with the recipes and that way anyone who needs some new ideas will have the option to use them.

I feel the need to make this warning: we do not eat like regular Mormons (I am sorry if you find that insulting); meaning there won't be a lot casseroles, I seldom you cream of... soups, or really anything with the word cream in the title, there are a lot meatless dishes, and a lot soups (I love soup). So if your family is big into meat and potatoes then this blog probably won't satisfy them (although their heart, blood pressure, and cholesterol may wish it would). I do occasionally cook with those ingredients and we do occasionally eat really fattening foods. But for the most part I try to make my meals as healthy as possible (to a point; I still like flavor). Lest any of you think I am a health nut, I should make it clear that I am not. I wish I was, but I like Cheetos way too much.

Here is the link; I hope this helps with your planning each week...

pic, pic, pic...here are some pics

Poor Davie; this was when he was really sick. So sick, in fact, that he actually fell asleep on Scott; normally that would never happen. It did make a cute picture.
I couldn't get this bottom pic to turn the right way....nonetheless; Gracie wanted "lots" of ribbons in her hair yesterday. So this is the result; six different ribbons, one happy girl in a tutu.

The funny part is that even when I took a picture of the back of her head she still said, "Cheese."

the time has come...

I have to admit, I have grown tired of blogging. I simply do it for the sake of my kids' grandparents who are all on the other side of the world (in opposite directions). I actually wish I could get on and rant and rave about the political climate, my frustrations with public education policies, insurance and how I know it is a rip off, my views on social programs and the welfare system, and so on (the list could go on and on and on). But no one really cares about all that and I think I would create a lot of enemies in the process. So instead of boring you with my endless opinions (and they really are endless) I will continue to write about the hum-drum day to day events; it is, after all, why the grandparents read...

The last few weeks have been full and very tiring. As I sit here and write Davie is screaming because his one true love (ME) isn't holding him; he does that a lot lately. Gracie is rinsing off her princess shoes in the bathroom sink because a dragon attacked her on the way to the chicken coop and now she has mud on her shoes (her story, not mine). And Adam is secretly scrounging for food because he is "starving," but not starving enough the eat the grapes and oranges I have left on counter for them to snack on (no doubt I will find him with chocolate around his mouth).

So back to the last few weeks...about three weeks ago I contracted pink eye in both of my eyes. This was probably the worse case of pink eye I have ever seen; it took about ten days before I was able to put my contacts in again - I woke up each morning for about five days with my eyes completely glued shut. It was pretty miserable. By some miracle (and a lot of hand washing and laundry) none of my kids or Scott got it. But just as that was winding down David was starting to have something go on with him. He was getting fevers and throwing up all the time. I chalked it up to a bad cold or teething (although since then I have read that teething does not cause a fever). His fevers persisted and started to get high, like 102 and 103 degrees. Finally on Thursday, after this had been taking place for about ten days I decided that we have good health insurance and I should use it; so I took him in (despite the fact that I had just been in the week before for Adam who has some strange skin condition on the back of his leg). I figured the doc would tell me that he is fine and send me home. Boy, was I wrong. She began running all sorts of tests trying to eliminate different possibilities. Strep...negative. Urine infection...negative. Flu...negative. So we were instructed to go to the lab and have blood work done. I didn't think this was a big deal until I got there and realized they take blood from an 8 month old the same way they take it from an adult - from the vein in his little arm. Oh man that the was the saddest thing ever. Well, long story short (too late)...we have been going from doctors to labs everyday (except Sunday) since Thursday. Today is the first day I haven't had to go somewhere. They had to get blood from him three times (so NOT fun), he had to get two honey-consistency antibiotic shots and now he is on a regular medication. But he hasn't had a fever in three days and his blood looks really good. In the end my doctor figured he has some bacterial infection; she doesn't know what, but it looks like it is clearing up. Now he is just so used to being held all the time that he will hardly let me out of his sight.

So there is my last few weeks. My house looks like hurricane Katrina came through, my surprise, overnight, birthday trip to Park City was ruined by lab work and doctors appointments, and my actual birthday was ruined by our choir director who thought it would be a good idea to meet one hour before Stake Conference to run through a couple of simple songs (no french toast for me). Although on the up side, my birthday ended up being a lot fun with some really good food, Davie is feeling better, Gracie continues to make me laugh everyday, the chickens (that we are babysitting for Renee for a few months) bring much delight to the kids, Lily is excelling at school, and Adam is...well, still Adam. Plus I have very kind friends, neighbors, and sisters who have helped me tremendously over the last few weeks during the many many trips I have made to all the different medical facilities that I have had to visit. So life isn't so bad and even if is seems that it is; it is definitely looking up.
